Finalist for ‘Food Pub of the Year’...
Welcome to cloud nine, the current cloud we are all sitting on! On Wednesday 21st April 2010 our fantastic mill was awarded one of the most prestigious awards in the pub industry calendar - ‘Pub of the Year’. Not only that, we walked away with a second award of ‘Freehouse of the year’ and were runners up to the exceptional Stag at Offchurch, with ‘Food pub of the Year’; which if you are ever in Leamington Spa, you must pay a visit.
To win this award means a huge amount to us, showing how we truly have now turned the once unloved, deprived mill into quite literally the best pub in the land.
A huge thanks to all our customers, whom most are now are friends, our brilliant suppliers and of course the team we have working day and night to make sure our customers get a great experience every time they visit.
So what happened?
At a glitzy awards night at Grosvenor House Hotel in London in front of 1600 of the pub industries finest, we were taking in the atmosphere, listening to Michael McIntyre call out the names of the 5 other finalists and had our fingers very tightly crossed!
The first award; Food Pub of the Year, slipped through our fingers as the Stag at Offchurch came on screen. We always knew it would be tough; they are two young chaps who are doing an amazing job.
Slightly downhearted we looked at each other and thought, oh well, nice to be here.
Colin decided wine was the best route to contain disappointment, but luckily after pouring a very large glass we were onto the next award.
As the names were called out we just wondered, what if...then the picture of the Wiremill came on screen and the room erupted. That was it; 2 years, 7 months and 3 days of pain, joy, ups, downs, lefts, rights, you name it we’ve had it, amount in one thing; if nothing else we have begun the journey to realize a dream and it’s coming true.
We rushed on stage for the trophy before the screen changed and we were told there had been a mistake to just as importantly in our eyes at the time give Michael a quick hug possibly even a kiss. Anthony, as always the opportunist went in for the kiss but was cunningly side stepped by the obviously talented McIntyre defensive strategy. It was ok, what we didn’t know is there was another opportunity coming.
Unbeknown to us, an obvious oversight; the winners of the categories are then placed into an overall award on the night. Pub of the Year is the overall winning award and we were in it. As the Wiremill’s picture flashed on screen again we were somewhat puzzled. Then it all clicked into place, just in time as the booming voice came across the room “...and the winner is The Wiremill, Surrey...”
To win the Freehouse of the year is amazing, to also walk away with Pub of the Year 2010, WOW.
We now have two fantastic trophies on the bar counter and the doors are wide open, come and see us, we would love to see you.
